In this costume film, Belmondo does Cartouche again on autopilot, but it's all a lot less.

Amusing film, which, however, never really gets great and with a very abrupt ending.

This way you are still fully engaged in the battle and so a very easy ending is fabricated.

A meager six, or three stars.

Adventure comedy with Belmondo set in the turbulent years of the French Revolution. An adventurer returns from America to France after six years to divorce his lawful wife, whom he left behind after killing a pushy baron. He must obtain a divorce certificate because otherwise he cannot marry his American lover. But he is torn between Republicans and Royalists...

Les Mariés de l'An II was a fairly big success at the time, with some familiar faces from those years. It is a lively film that parodies the French Revolution years while also touching on the classic cloak and sword film. The naive romanticism also plays a major role, but without getting serious. It has its amusing moments, but I got tired of it pretty quickly. And yes, the abrupt ending is nothing to be positive about.
