De Glazen Kerk plot

Filmmaker Matthijs Vuijk's grandmother's life is turned upside down: the church she's attended all her life in the small Zeeland village of Kortgene has gone bankrupt. One man seems to be the savior: Zuidas pastor and entrepreneur Ruben van Zwieten buys the church building to start a place of encounter and inspiration, complete with a bar and apartments. Grandma watches with dismay. Will she be able to embrace this transformation?

Coby Boot, the grandmother of director Vuijk, is deeply attached to the congregation of the St. Nicholas Church in Kortgene, a small town on Noord-Beveland. Due to financial problems, maintenance is no longer affordable, and the church is in danger of losing its function. A young entrepreneur steps in with a plan to transform the church into a “place of reflection.” It sounds nice, but Coby and other congregation members are skeptical about the actual intentions of this fast-talking young man from the Randstad. This remarkable documentary portrays the contrast between old and young, between Christian modesty and business bluster, and between historical awareness and short-term opportunism. It also provides insight into the significance and value of church congregations, especially in small, remote places like Kortgene.
