Entertaining 'ballet-fu' movie. The story is simple, which is permissible within this genre. The mix of action, ballet kung-fu, comedy, and plenty of blood is daring but doesn't quite work out. It is all just a bit too much of a good thing, making the film feel somewhat unbalanced and leaving little room for real character development. Otherwise, it is a quick watch and the running time is fine for the level. The action scenes look quite slick and are skillfully filmed, with blood flowing profusely. The humor isn't always successful, but is otherwise not distracting. The acting is otherwise fine. 3.0.

All those streaming productions really take the fun out of the premise. This could have been genuinely enjoyable, but it goes in one ear and out the other. The exhibition is thrown at you from all sides, and you have no reason to stay captivated, because everything is mapped out for you. Risks are avoided like the plague, and I consider that a bad thing.

For those interested, here is a more extensive review.

From the very beginning, the film establishes an ominous atmosphere. In doing so, Pretty Lethal relies heavily on its settings: a dark forest from which the film quickly leaves without anything remarkable happening, and a remote inn that looks so inhospitable that you wonder why anyone would want to stay there of their own free will. The majority of the film takes place in the inn. An inn frequented by unsavory characters, where crime runs rampant, and where an innocent group of ballet dancers bursts in.

Director Vicky Jewson starts the escalation early on. There is action. People get killed. Ballet dancers versus hardened gangsters. Very overdone and quite absurd. Ah, a comedy, you think. Not at all. The intention is to take it seriously. That is not easy given the absurd script and the exaggerated characterization of the characters. The film is a mediocre action thriller. So I tried to view the film as a mindless action comedy. That seems to work better at first, were it not that Pretty Lethal is, besides being a mediocre thriller, also a mediocre comedy.

Weak stuff. The film succeeds with its dark settings. The film also succeeds with the fresh acting of the cast. The film is not suspenseful. Nor is it funny. The content is insignificant. The story is held together by coincidences and is full of repetition. Initially, action combined with ballet is actually quite nice to watch. After the umpteenth ballet-like action scene, I shrugged my shoulders wearily. Uma Thurman is in it too, by the way. I read it afterwards. I hadn't recognized her. Must have been the fatigue.
