Les Rayons et les Ombres plot

French journalist Jean Luchaire and German Francophile Otto Abetz become friends upon meeting. Together, they fight to maintain peace on the European continent. Meanwhile, Jean's daughter Corinne is working hard to make it as a film actress. When World War II breaks out and France falls under the Nazi regime, both men will play leading roles on stage. Jean sinks into collaboration and, in 1940, establishes the evening newspaper Les Nouveaux Temps. Otto, in turn, is appointed German ambassador to the French capital.

What a film! Go see it, people, go see it! Proof of the proposition that good people, people of good will, are capable of terrible things. But this film is not about black and white, but about shades of gray. About people with good intentions, people with doubts, who know deep down that they are on the wrong path, yet continue to the bitter end. Just as much a film about moral corruption as it is about collaboration with the Germans in France during the Second World War.

Libraries have been filled with writings about why there was so much collaboration with the German occupiers in France, especially within the social elite. Not by the French themselves, though. This film, too, strikes a raw nerve. Even after eighty years. Starring performances here from Jean Dujardin as the journalist Jean Luchaire and the beautiful Nastya Golubeva as his daughter Corinne. Also a fine role by August Diehl as the German 'ambassador' Otto Abetz, who had everyone in the Paris of those days on a leash. He got off lightly after the war with just five years. That must have been a bitter pill for the French resistance. They gave him a car as a gift that must have been tampered with. Abetz and his wife did not survive the accident that resulted. But that is not part of the film. It could have been included, too...
