The Road to Fenix plot

For five years, "The Road to Fenix" follows the transformation of a historic harbor warehouse in Rotterdam into an art museum about migration: a place filled with stories about what it means to leave, travel, and start over. In the heart of the Fenix warehouse on Katendrecht, where millions of migrants departed and just as many arrived, rises the newest addition to the Rotterdam skyline: the stainless steel Tornado. A staircase, lookout point, and artwork all in one, designed by Chinese architect Ma Yansong.

Fenix is the art museum about migration in Rotterdam that was festively opened by Queen Máxima on May 17, 2025. Bakker followed the 'road to Fenix' from 2019, when the intended space was not delivered as desired. It is the first of a series of obstacles that the many people responsible must overcome. An hour and a half proves to be on the short side to tell the whole story in detail, but it undoubtedly provides insight into what goes into setting up such an ambitious project. Moreover, it helps that the people involved are not camera-shy and do not mince words.
