Hélène returns to her hometown under a new identity. Consumed by a lust for revenge, she is determined to bring down the Graff family. In her lonely struggle, she will let nothing and no one stand in her way—even though her past threatens to catch up with her before she achieves her goal.

Sometime in the mid-19th century, a Luxembourg village is ravaged by death and famine. In the village, the ruthless village chief Graff rules with an iron fist. The Luxembourg film tells the story of Helene, who was once forced to flee the village due to Graff's actions and has returned to exact revenge. Helene is a woman with a mission. She does everything in her power to bring down the tyrannical Graff family.
Läif a Séil distinguishes itself through its unusual historical setting and strong visual elements. Director and co-author Loïc Tanson visibly values an authentic portrayal of the era. He creates a grim, raw world characterized by religious oppression and brutal violence. The setting and atmosphere are magnificently rendered. The depiction of the harsh living conditions of the villagers suffering under tyranny, as well as the rugged, pristine nature surrounding the village, are impressive. This is thanks to good camerawork and beautiful compositions combined with an ominous and menacing-sounding score.
However, against all that beauty stands a simplistic and highly predictable story, which also unfolds at a particularly slow pace. The time it takes for completely conventional plot elements to blossom and for clichéd character developments to evolve is a strain on the viewer's patience. Läif a Séil convinces with its impressive depiction of setting and atmosphere. The film does not rely on the storyline.
