A great sequel.

You do notice that the film is simply a bit more beautiful, but otherwise, well, the film doesn't offer anything new. Was this to be expected? Yes. Is it a shame? Yes. The music is beautiful and there are plenty of references to the games.

I think I'll watch it a second time soon, but with the English cast. Man, oh man, I was so annoyed by the Dutch voices.

ADHD cinema, but at its worst. Good heavens, what a monstrosity this was. A film like Uncut Gems is also full of adrenaline, but that is a film with a vision made by talented people. This Super Mario is mainly just very hectic with a lot of noise (think of that superfluous scene with the T-Rex or that castle that crashes and just keeps making noise) to keep you from getting bored for a single second, but that is exactly why you get bored. The film started and I saw that it was by Illumination and was already a bit apprehensive. I later reread my review of the first Super Mario and apparently I had exactly the same thought back then, except that that film was actually okay at times. But in this sequel, there is absolutely nothing to do, and you notice in every second that this is a loveless work. Visually nothing special to see, voice acting on autopilot, and a story that flies in all directions without any real build-up or sequence of scenes. 0.5*.

Sorry, but Mario Part 2 is really a terrible movie.

Mario titles (the games) naturally never rely on the story, but in this film, it is truly dramatic. On top of that, there is a sort of incessant 'action' in this film. Hard to explain, but to me, it felt totally over the top. Subtlety was nowhere to be found. And that is typical of Mario/Nintendo, I think.

All in all, I was mostly annoyed by this film. Even though I actually found part 1 surprisingly fun and 'inventive'.
