The discovery of a shipment of cocaine in the hull of a docked ship in Huelva presents the crew with a dilemma. Deep-sea diver Antonio [Antonio de la Torre] and his sister Estrella [Bárbara Lennie] see this as an opportunity to continue their work and save the local economy. But naturally, they are not the only ones who want to get a piece of this catch. Variant on A Simple Plan does not rely on originality, but well-developed characters and attention to local culture offer some compensation.

The unknown world underwater, the unknown world of divers, the unknown world of smuggling. I happen to know quite a few people in two of those three worlds; should I ask them about how things really work? And do I not want to know, or do I not want them to start telling me fairy tales? The chance that there are no rats on a seagoing ship is astronomically small, they say. And perhaps the chance that nothing is being smuggled is even smaller. To a landlubber, a ship might be a single entity, something watertight—but for anyone who has ever stuck their nose underwater, a ship is a storage box with very, very many compartments.

Nevertheless, I feel that this film manages to make a rather uncompelling story out of it. The characters are only marginally fleshed out, the work is barely fleshed out, and the danger is barely palpable—and in a way that makes me feel my acquaintances will tune out.

Furthermore, as a regular film above water, it falls quite short. Not much to write home about. De La Torre lets everything float on some old-man antics and relies on the expressive power of his wrinkles, while Lennie plays the caring wife. It is all very unsurprising, very meaningless, and above all, very lazy.

Even the setting in Huelva is made of nothing, even though the stories there are there for the taking. There is a shot, appearing for a minute or so somewhere, but it floats just as hopelessly as the entire film. I would have preferred to make something of that, instead of this pointless mess with drugs in an outboard locker—when everyone surely knows from the newspapers by now that these days it comes onto the deck by the container, not by the kilo but by the ton.

Quite a missed opportunity, then. You’d be better off watching The Deep (1977) again; that film at least had a decent story—and in my opinion, therefore, a whole lot more believable than what this fairy tale wants to foist on you. Better visuals, too. And a much, much better soundtrack.
