Un Fantasma en la Batalla plot

Inspired by the most important undercover operation against ETA, a mission that became a turning point in the Spanish fight against terrorism. Set in the 1990s and 2000s, the film tells the story of Amaia, a young Guardia Civil agent. She spent over a decade working undercover within the terrorist organization, with the goal of finding secret weapons caches ("zulos") hidden in southern France.

A good film about a female agent who spends years undercover as a member of the terrorist group ETA. It's a film that reads like an espionage thriller about the bloody ETA struggle in the 1990s, but despite a fictional protagonist, it's supported by archive footage here and there. This protagonist is a bit superficial at first, but this gradually improves (partly thanks to Susana Abaitua's subtle acting).

A thrilling and exceptionally well-made film. I was impressed by this film, and it resonated for days after I saw it. The film uses real footage from the years when ETA terrorized Spain. This works very well here and adds a special dimension to the film's atmosphere. And it's perfectly captured by capturing the 1980s in every detail, from cars to doorknobs. From ashtrays to clothing. Moreover, the cinematography is stunning, and the soundtrack is a work of art. In some ways, this all creates a beautiful film, with a constantly menacing tension. The filmmakers deserve a huge compliment for this. The leading roles became real characters thanks to the excellent acting.

I grew up regularly watching news stories about the ETA attacks. I even gave a presentation about them in high school. Two of my favorite books (Thomas Nevinson and Berta Isla, both by Javier Marias) have the same underlying tension as this film, and ETA also plays a significant role.

The ETA years in the equally fascinating Basque Country remain a fascinating time. Exciting and well, very well, filmed here.
