Shu-Fen [Janel Tsai] has come to Taipei to set up shop and build a life for her teenage daughter I-Ann [Shih-Yuan Ma] and the much younger I-Jing [Nina Ye]. I-Jing is left-handed, and her grandfather [Akio Chen] tells her that this is "the hand of the devil." In her childish naiveté, I-Jing interprets this criticism differently than intended. Meanwhile, I-Ann struggles with love, and Shu-Fen with financial obligations. A beautifully shot family drama with a disarming performance by the superbly directed Ye and a remarkable resolution. It's sure to bring both laughter and tears.

Sean Baker worked on the film, and it feels a bit like The Florida Project: a documentary-style film follows a family that looks normal, but whose members have their own problems and secrets. The perspective is primarily that of the young child, who has no idea what's happening, yet unknowingly plays a key role in the plot. One criticism might be that the plot lacks a strong focus, other than that everything will turn out alright, but I think that's related to the child's perspective: the film begins with her looking through a kaleidoscope, and the film also shows the family through a kaleidoscope. The film's storylines are interesting, sometimes exciting and sometimes moving, and the film's realism significantly enhances the quality. The film itself seems to criticize traditions: for example, the ban on using the left hand, but especially the precarious position of women in a patriarchal society, where different generations of women pass on tradition in their own way, but also undermine it. All in all it's a very nice movie.

A family drama about a single mother and her two daughters who move to the capital and open a street stall. It's a family that has already faced its fair share of setbacks and struggles to make ends meet. I struggled to get through the first hour and even found it a bit soapy and boring. The three characters take turns in focusing. Most of that attention goes to a girl named I-Jing, who believes she does evil things with her left hand, including stealing small trinkets from nearby boutiques and unintentionally causing the death of her pet meerkat. Out of superstition, her grandfather convinces her this is the devil's hand. The eldest daughter came across as a grumpy brat, which, for me, was one of the reasons the film didn't immediately resonate.

It could have been a deeply charged drama, but the director opted for positivity and humor. It reminded me of Wong Kar Wai films at times. The film effectively conceals its punch line until the very end. I found the last 40 minutes to be the film's best, though it's a shame that this can't be said from the very beginning, as I would have liked to give it more than 3 stars. A bit overrated in my opinion, but I would completely understand if it were raining with high ratings. I wanted to catch this film quickly, but unfortunately, it won't be in my top 10 this year.
