I just found this film odd and uninteresting. It was a mix of a Faustian theme mixed with themes about the pressure on athletes and parenting, but presented in a somewhat unsettling way, and I somehow got the feeling the director didn't dare go all the way. I couldn't relate to this, and all in all, it was a dull film. Especially due to Withers's flat performance, but also a Wayans who should have brought some life and verve, it remains somewhat colorless. The longer the film went on (and thankfully it wasn't very long), the less and less it captivated me.

I also found the audiovisuals rather unimpressive. Lots of colors, music pumping in the background, a camera that moves quite a bit—normally things I enjoy, but this director's approach is uninspired, and in that respect, the film never really resonates with me. The occasional loud noise doesn't change the fact that the film is otherwise never exciting, creepy, or anything like that. There are some lovely shots here and there that seek symmetry and have some pretty good lighting. 1.0*.

For over 14 years, Cameron Cade [Tyriq Withers] has dreamed of being the quarterback of The Saviors. Now that the court is proposing that current quarterback (and Greatest Of All Time) Isaiah White [Marlon Wayans] is entering his final season, he senses his chance. It goes up in flames when Cameron is beaten by a stranger. To his delight, he receives an invitation to a personal "boot camp" at the remote house/training complex where Isaiah lives with his wife [Julia Fox]. This boot camp quickly takes on sinister proportions, forcing Cameron to face athletic and moral dilemmas. Despite his comedic image, Wayans is very convincing as the extremely driven mentor, but a lack of suspense makes the horror scenes more bizarre than terrifying… or entertaining. There could have been much more.

An intense and unique combination of sports and horror film, making it practically the only one that truly manages to unite these completely different premise. "Him" undeniably goes off the rails in the finale, bordering on the ridiculous, but thankfully Marlon Wayans's performance is very convincing, and director Justin Tipping visually masters his film superbly. Several interspersed horror moments are portrayed in a particularly confronting and unsettling way, and the use of color and the structure are above average. It's therefore all the more unfortunate that a rather hasty and sloppy explanation is offered, apparently masquerading as original.
