The collapse of the ecosystem sparked a civil war over the farms that could provide what remains of humanity with food. Hailey [Danielle Deadwyler] and her family fiercely defend their farm from prowling cannibals who have violently taken over several farms. The title refers to an 1865 compensation program for freed slaves that was reversed by President Johnson. Thorne blends elements of the American Civil War, the climate crisis, and the resurgence of white Christian conservatism in this intelligently written, entertaining thriller.

Boring, unbelievable action movie that couldn't hold my attention for a single minute; what nonsense. At the beginning of the film: careful with the bullets, we don't have many, before we start shooting around en masse for the rest of the movie. The gas never runs out either. Someone gets shot in the stomach—no problem, we don't have any medication, but we can still do magic. A stab in the back, no problem. Yes, mom...

The feature film debut of RT Thorne. Together with Glenn Taylor and Lora Campbell, this was also his debut as a screenwriter.

Although the Canadian distribution company Mongrel Media gave this film a wider release, for some reason very little was invested in marketing. As a result, the film performed poorly and was pulled from virtually all cinemas after the second week. The cannibals are referred to as W. This is likely a reference to the Algonquian mythological creature named the wendigo. The wendigo is said to be able to possess humans and inflict an insatiable hunger on its victims, specifically a strong urge to eat other people.

A decent film with a profound concept. The atmosphere is dark and the main character treats her family like a platoon.
