The Silent Hour plot
Boston police detective Frank Shaw returns to duty with permanent hearing loss after an injury. He is assigned to interpret for Ava Fremont, a deaf witness to a brutal gang murder. When the killers return to dispose of her, they are cornered in an apartment building that will soon be destroyed. Cut off from the outside world, these two strangers must rely on each other to outsmart the killers who cannot hear them coming.

I do like these kinds of cat and mouse games, even in a single location. That's why I rated Dredd from 2012 so highly, for example. But this movie completely misses the mark. Our hero detective comes across as if he's experiencing his first day as a detective. For example, he knew that someone within the force leaked information, but is as happy as a child when two officers show up who you immediately know are dirty. The lady has to tell him this, after which he has to let it all sink in in disbelief. His good friend from the office shows up a little later, all alone, without backup, knowing what's going on, and again he's as happy as a child, thinking his buddy is walking into a trap. Unbelievable. Add a cheesy ending to that and this movie can go straight in the trash.

Mediocre action thriller. The story is simple. The execution is just about passable. The structure is reasonable and the film remains captivating until the end. Not nerve-wracking but there are still some exciting scenes. The film could have been a bit more varied, but it is not really boring. Kinnaman plays a pretty good role. Visually otherwise fine without too much frills. 3.0
