Maria plot

Good film about the last two weeks of the life of opera singer Maria Callas. Not the first biopic by director Pablo Larraín. But a bit more standard compared to his previous biopics by using flashbacks. The film looks beautiful with nice camerawork. Angelina Jolie plays a good role and also knows how to convince during the singing scenes (did somebody say Oscar?).

This film shows an eccentric Maria Callas who, protected by her housekeeper and footman, enters the last days of her life, where the medication clearly helps her through.
Masterful performances from these 3 characters make this perfectly placed and presented within the time frame of 1970s Paris.
It is clear to everyone that "La Callas" will no longer perform and gradually this realization dawns on her as well.
Although Maria Callas has been completely forgotten by the mainstream population, this film still gives a beautiful picture of her greatness of yesteryear, combined with her decline in later life.
Beautiful, modest film, definitely worth watching and a tribute to this remarkable lady.

The film typifies Callas for me: good but it doesn't touch me. That also applies to Callas herself. Great singer but it doesn't do anything for me when I hear her. I'd rather have a famous opera singer like Montserrat Caballé. But even Paul de Leeuw touches me more.
Finally, a beautifully shot film and a biopic that fortunately does not go from high to low but deliberately has a very limited range, in this case the last days with a single flashback. I like that. On the other hand, it is not a very normal film because dream and reality sometimes get mixed up. That gives the film a certain quality by giving an idea of how Callas experienced those days herself (at least in the eyes of the makers) but also that the film did not really grab me. The somewhat boring performance of a colorless Jolie does not really help either, the two servants in the house did more for me.
Nevertheless, visually beautiful, almost fairytale-like with those colors. Music fine. Tempo also excellent because despite the fact that the film did not touch me, those 2 hours went by quite smoothly. And the ending is honestly beautiful. Not all lyrical texts about how things went with certain people or how great Callas was but a kind of ambient music with old images without fuss. That felt sincere. 3.0*.
