When Iman [Missagh Zareh] is appointed as an investigating judge in Tehran, wife Najmeh [Soheila Golestani] impresses upon teenage daughters Rezvan [Mahsa Rostami] and Sana [Setareh Maleki] that they must behave exemplarily at all times. But that becomes difficult when protests break out at their school following the death of Mahsa Amini, especially when niece Sadaf [Niousha Akshi] is seriously injured. Najmeh is torn between loyalty to her husband, who trusts the current regime, and her love for her daughters, who threaten to turn against that same regime. Rasoulof expertly weaves authentic footage of the protests into this intelligent, suspenseful political thriller with Golestani as the standout in an excellent cast.

Brilliant film. Iranian cinema rarely or never disappoints. For me, the contender for best foreign film at the upcoming Oscars. The film focuses on a fictional family and develops various subplots, with the most recent unrest in Iran, following the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, as a common thread throughout the film.

Iman's family is a fairly classic family with a wife and two teenage daughters. The family lives together harmoniously and has a fairly loose upbringing by Iranian standards. The laws of the regime and the will of God are of course very important, but opinions may already be proclaimed. Fundamentalists will however see a message in this that Iman should have applied "the teaching" much more strictly, then all the disaster might not have befallen him ...

Iman's new position as investigating judge is a poisoned chalice. He is the straw man and for the convicts and their relatives the poster boy for the criminal proceedings (read: executions). With the ongoing unrest it is particularly busy and his initial moral doubts fade away into immoral assembly line work.

His wife Najmeh watches over her family, wants her daughters to live traditionally. Ultimately, she has to make a choice between her family and the rules of the state. Her daughters are free-spirited and have many questions about the way things are done. This is only made more acute by the protests outside.

The film creates a captivating representation of the mutual tensions and trust that gradually changes into distrust within the family. In fact, it is about a banal thing with far-reaching consequences. The film is quite long, but I was not bored for a second. Beautifully constructed, excellent direction and as always excellent acting!

The film calmly tells how the theocratic, patriarchal system in Iran influences the life of a family. The father, recently promoted to investigating judge, colludes opportunistically with the regime whose ideology he has adopted. His two young daughters see on social media how the government cracks down on student protests, but are forced - under protest - to conform to the patriarchy, while the mother (who only gets the information from state television) constantly tries to mediate in the family.

The family is slowly in danger of falling apart, but director Mohammad Rasoulof did not have to flee his homeland for nothing: his film choices leave nothing to be desired in terms of clarity.
