Ben Sadler is appointed sheriff in a Texas town. When young Mexican worker Martin Garralaga is murdered, Virgil Renchler, a landowner and owner of the Golden Empire Ranch, wants Sadler to do nothing. Sadler, however, ignores Renchler's wishes and decides to investigate the murder case anyway. Sadler learns that Martin was in love with Renchler's daughter Skippy.
