Lazareth plot

"Lazareth must be protected at any cost"

Lee has been raising her nieces Imogen and Maeve in an isolated cabin in the woods for more than a decade. She decided to adopt them after the death of their parents. The girls are raised in a specific way because a deadly pandemic is raging. For example, Imogen and Maeve are never allowed to leave the forest, they must avoid all interaction with outsiders and they can only place their trust in Lee. But when they encounter a wounded man in the nearby woods, Lee's absolute control begins to unravel as their faith in her, and everything they've ever known, begins to unravel.

Since the world's population was decimated by a deadly virus, people have been living (again) in small groups as hunters and gatherers. Lee [Ashley] lives with Imogen [Katie Douglas] and Maeve [Sarah Pidgeon] in Lazareth, where they make decisions democratically. When the injured Owen [Asher Angel] knocks on Lazareth's door, Imogen and Maeve vote to temporarily take in and care for this guest. But Read's reservations turn out to be for good reason, as it turns out when a trio of menacing-looking young people appear. Well-acted thriller with a pessimistic view of the future distinguishes itself from many similar films by focusing on three women. That is definitely a plus. Too bad the story is ultimately quite conventional.

Disappointing.

There are certainly better film adaptations of the idea - off the top of my head I can name Into The Forest (2015) or even How I Live Now (2013). But this film still comes across as one that offers nothing new and is made rather lazily.

I also found the cinematography to be rather unappealing, and the images dull and dull - but not believable in the service of the story. And the soundtrack, especially during the credits, was like nails on a blackboard to me.
