What a terrible movie that was. Empathy was seriously tested by repulsive characters with zero charisma who were incessantly snapping, ranting and shouting at each other, unable to wring even one decent, constructive sentence out of their ugly faces. I didn't care one bit about these irritating characters who I hoped would all die quickly, seventies-era movie-wise. But that was quite disappointing. The film takes place almost completely in semi- or completely dark, perhaps to mask the limited budget and the resulting few, memorable SFX. No spectacular feats, no tension, nothing you haven't seen before. It wasn't exactly intelligent either: in one scene our surviving foursome had to go through a narrow corridor full of spiders, with the last character having to find enough time to beat the light timer before it went out. Yes, then walk, man, instead of shuffling like a quasi Romero zombie.

Kaleb [Théo Christine] collects special (small) animals and buys a spider from Dubai for €100 that he calls Rihanna. The prologue makes it clear that this is a dangerous creature, so when it manages to escape it is only a matter of time before Kaleb, his friends and other residents of the apartment complex discover what unpleasant qualities this Rihanna has. This winner of the César for best horror film has well-developed, sympathetic main characters and builds up the suspense effectively in the first 70 minutes. It's a shame that Vanicek then abandons suspense in favor of hysteria, thus missing the opportunity to deliver a genre classic. Fortunately, the screenplay by Vnicek and Florent Bernard still has a few surprises in store.

The characters also horrified me more than the spiders. The banlieue booze and their unedifying dialogues and actions devoid of any logic, the downright horrible French rap in the background and unfortunately too often foreground, the dreary apartment block in which the entire film takes place... You really can't call this good . I think the positive comments mainly come from city sparrows who have lost their feeling for nature. I live in the country and haven't killed a spider in decades. If they are too much in the picture, they will be molested by the cats, but otherwise they can go wherever they want. In my opinion, this theme lends itself better to horror comedy such as Arachnophobia or Eight Legged Freaks. There is plenty of action in the film and the CGI certainly doesn't look bad.
