Helen lives in North Wales with her ex, his girlfriend of 20 years and their new baby. She spends her nights packing slaughtered chickens and her days caring for dying mother-in-law Gwen. Life does not look rosy for Helen. But when her childhood sweetheart Joanne returns to the village, Helen's zest for life also returns.

Due to a lack of money, Helen [Louise Brealey] lives with her ex-husband [Celyn Jones] and his 20-year-old girlfriend [Emily Fairn] and cares for her bedridden ex-mother-in-law Gwen [Sorcha Cusack]. When Joanne [Annabel Scholey] returns as a neighbor after years, Gwen encourages Helen to reconnect. Both women struggle with their past. Pugh uses pop songs by Neil Diamond and Minnie Ripperton, among others, to express Helen's emotions. The original element is that Helen sings along loudly and at the top of her lungs; sometimes alone, sometimes with her friends. The musical interludes and the solidarity of Helen's friends make this irresistible and alternately joyful and moving. The predictable plot therefore does not really matter.
