Fascinating, intimate documentary about Diana Nyad, the American swimmer who in 2013, at the age of 64, became the first person ever to swim from Cuba to Florida without the protection of a shark cage and without the use of fins. Nyad is a charismatic lump of energy who makes almost inhuman demands on herself, driven by childhood trauma, which she openly talks about here. The epic tour de force that she ultimately delivers is unfortunately rather neglected at the end of the documentary. Until then, this is a first-rate portrait of a unique talent.

Olympic swimmer Diane Nyad ended her career in 1978 after a failed attempt to become the first human to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. Thirty years later, Diane decides to finally try to make her long-cherished dream come true. Although she is now 58 years old and has not swum for 30 years, she throws herself heart and soul into her mission, with her partner Bonnie Stoll as her support, confidant, and strict coach. Nyad and Stoll speak openly about the traumatic experiences that largely explain Diane's perseverance and pain tolerance. The focus is primarily on the setbacks, and Wheeler also shows the emotional consequences of these for Stoll and the team supporting Diane during the journey. A poignant, moving, and gripping portrait of a person for whom one cannot help but feel great admiration and a truckload of respect. This story was successfully adapted into a film 10 years later as Nyad, starring Annette Bening as Diane and Jodie Foster as Bonnie.
