The two unemployed actors Paul Hartwig and Max Bach earn their money with a second-hand book stall while waiting for better times. In the hope of work, Paul visits a theater agency every day. One day it seems to work when theater director Schrader offers him a role in an operetta. What this does not tell you is that everything depends on the financial support of a shoe manufacturer. On the evening when everything has to be settled, Paul thinks he has to save the honor of the young Lisa Brandes and that has unforeseen consequences.
