Night Swim plot
"Everything you fear is under the surface."
Ray Waller is a former Major League baseball player forced into early retirement due to a degenerative disease. He moves into a new house with his concerned wife Eve, teenage daughter Izzy and son Elliot. Ray secretly hopes, against all odds, to return as a professional baseball player and convinces Eve that the sparkling pool in the backyard of the new house will be fun for the kids and provide him with physical therapy. But a dark secret from the house's past unleashes a malevolent force that drags the family into the depths of inescapable terror.

Pretty nice. An evil swimming pool is something different. It doesn't want to be really scary or exciting.
It is especially the scenes in and around the pool that are worth watching. The underwater images are nicely filmed and at times quite oppressive. However, when things get really dire, the moment is often over, which takes some of the tension out of it. Could have put in a bit more.
It all becomes less so towards the end. That clown or whatever it is in the water doesn't make too much of an impression and the choice for the briefly possessed main character is trite.

Director Bryce McGuire chooses to draw his feature film debut from a short film that he was partly responsible for 10 years ago. However, it is difficult to get a film out of a short piece of only 4 minutes and McGuire and co-screenwriter Rod Blackhurst also don't seem to quite know what to do with it. Night Swim is therefore mainly a well-known, not very original horror film that only occasionally delivers a successful tension arc. The swimming pool lends itself to a fairly special environment, but the final horror effect remains somewhat tame, leaving the enthusiast somewhat disappointed. There is little wrong with the acting of Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon, visually the film looks neat and the running time does not make a long impression, but in the end this film can join the list of horror films that you will forget in no time. Night Swim marks an unfortunate, somewhat disappointing debut from McGuire.
