15-year-old Tuesday [Lola Petticrew] suffers from a terminal illness and needs constant care in her final stages of life. Mother Zora [Julia Louis-Dreyfus] is overwhelmed with work and leaves daily care to a nurse [Leah Harvey]. When Death [Arinzé Kene] appears in the form of a huge macaw to get Tuesday, Zora takes desperate measures to keep her daughter with her. And that has unforeseen consequences. An inventive modern take on Ingmar Bergman's classic The Seventh Seal told from a female perspective. Writer/screenwriter Oniunas-Pusić adds a dose of bizarre humor that may alienate some viewers, but also prevents it from becoming heavy-handed. The leading role of a talking macaw (a CGI version of all-rounder Kene) will not immediately appeal to everyone, but anyone who gives this some time to flourish awaits an extraordinary film experience in the positive sense of the word. It goes without saying that Daina Oniunas-Pusić is a filmmaker to keep an eye on.

Surrealistic drama with some comic elements here and there about a mother and daughter who are literally and figuratively confronted with death. The post-apocalyptic elements of the script do not fully come to fruition, but the strong cast and the first-class special effects quickly ensure a fascinating viewing experience. The unpredictable development of both plot and characters is also a big plus. In terms of atmosphere, the film reminded me somewhat of A Ghost Story by director David Lowery.

A big blunder by A24. This film makes no choices and has such a hackneyed story that the makers came up with "death as a parrot" to cover up this fact. It also works because I see some reactions here already say "originally found". But then you set the bar low as far as I'm concerned.

Furthermore it is just an uninspired weak story about a mother who can't live without her daughter and tries to avoid death. With of course the most gruesome apocalyptic consequences. This concept is stolen from the series "discworld" in which death disappears and when nothing dies anymore you get chaos.

Only in this movie is no humor it is not scary and the dramatic parts well.. it is so lame really this movie is a kind of Prozac. For teenagers who have not seen much it may work but I don't like it.

And yes, great acting, beautiful pictures, technically nothing to complain about. So I can't give it 1 star. It's also quite entertaining. But you know, I'm done with those mwoh movies that are quite entertaining. I just want to see exceptional class. To be stimulated, I want to be challenged.

It seems like A24 is less and less willing to take on this challenge since they are now producing these kinds of titles. Hopefully this will not become a trend. This film is so clearly made with certain formulas and for a certain target group (young people) exactly the pitfall that so many big studios have fallen into... will A24 make the same mistake as the big studios now that they have had some successes?

I really think it sucks because I was a big fan of A24, then you knew you would get quality and something original... but there has been a trend in recent years that this film also falls into unfortunately.

2.5 because not bad but meh
