Low budget.

I think that if the writing and perhaps the acting had been of a bit higher quality, the low-budget aspect—particularly regarding effects, sets, and costumes—could have been approached much more forgivably. It is clear in itself that the film is overflowing with good intentions and at times it does have some charm—color filters give it quite an intimate bubble atmosphere, a fun composition is captured every now and then, and the lighthearted tone works fine—but there is too much that is substandard not to be distracted by.

Primarily, the film stumbles over structural problems in the script. Shifting focus on different characters makes everything and everyone feel interchangeable, and in each scene, there is more attention paid to slapstick character portrayals than to their substantive contribution to the main plot. Ultimately, this has little more to offer than a 'group of villagers uniting to fight an unexpected threat.'

The bit of animation in between was very charming. Somewhere, I would have liked to see more of that 2D crafting vibe in the setting itself; it is the kind of creativity that could have turned the limited budget into a visual style. What you get in return in the form of cheap props and poor effects irrevocably drags the film down. Lasting hope for the studio that also produced Book Of Birdie, but this wasn't it for me. 2*
