Surrounded plot

"Never surrender."

Five years after the Civil War, free-spirited woman and former Buffalo Soldier Moses 'Mo' Washington travels west to lay claim to a gold mine. It's a vicious, dangerous world for an unaccompanied black woman in 1870s America, so Mo travels across the deep frontier disguised as a man. After her stagecoach is ambushed by a group of murderous thieves, Mo is forced to keep legendary outlaw Tommy Walsh captive while the remaining passengers search for help. What follows is a battle of wills, where the line between hostage-taker and hostage becomes blurred as they both try to survive in the harsh western landscape.

Just watched it, nice quiet substantive story with occasional action.

What you don't expect from a western, usually a lot of shooting.

Average.

Interesting angle, and at least an angle to do something new in the genre - which modern westerns often do well. But Surrounded doesn't really appeal to me. The dynamic between prisoner and guard is too flat and offers little more than some marginal whining. The slavery issue as a subject should have made for a much more gripping story.

Jamie Bell and Letitia Wright are not charismatic enough in their interpretation. I expected more of them. The same goes for what this film offers audiovisually: I am also largely left wanting. Everything was there to do more, without overkill.

Five years after the Civil War, former slave and soldier Mo [Letitia Wright] poses as a man while taking a stagecoach from Brushwood to Colorado to claim a gold mine. The coach is ambushed by Tommy Walsh's [Jamie Bell] gang. The robbery fails, and while Wheeler [Jeffrey Donovan] transports the wounded to the nearest town and calls in a posse, Mo is assigned to guard Walsh. Unannounced passersby and Tommy's mind games make that difficult. It explicitly references John Ford's Stagecoach, but lacks the pace and humor of that classic. Mandler unfortunately opts for overblown melodrama and an overly exaggerated monologue about racism and the injustice of slavery.
