What a wonderfully intense film this is. Between the Barbie and Oppenheimer violence, this anime has done fantastic in Asia with $ 275 million box office to date. This is more than justified, because I have rarely experienced a sports match so intensely from minute to minute and especially that you also get to know the characters through the game. The match is a roller coaster ride of emotions that fly up and down and you live from minute 1. The film is long with a running time of over 2 hours. So of course it's not just the game you're watching. During the match, flashbacks are often made about how the team came together and in particular protagonist Miyagi and his childhood.
The flashbacks could perhaps have been a bit more extensive, because you still have the feeling that you have missed a lot and the whole way to that one match is not reflected in the film. Here you notice that this film based on a manga series still falls short of time to really be a masterpiece.
Fortunately, I was still able to enjoy the film immensely. Is the basketball really incredibly well and believably portrayed and the animation style is breathtakingly beautiful. Especially nice how the human characters move very naturally and realistically through the environments. And the basketball outfits also looked phenomenal.
Truly a top film that kept me on the edge of my seat from minute 1 to 124. A must see for any sports and anime fan.

Pleasantly surprised by this top manga, how incredibly well made! I was breathless watching from the beautiful start with the drawn basketball characters being brought to life as if it were Yahweh himself who breathes life into them….. until the (admittedly unsurprising) ending.
What a joy to watch!
And the soundtrack is also just fat, which is usually not the case with the often annoying tingle-tang music under most Manga films, including the good ones..
And that for a directing debut. Takehiko Inoue delivered a masterpiece right away...deep bow.
