What a surprisingly fun movie this is. Haven't heard anything about it and suddenly it's on Netflix. The trailer promised a lot and it delivered. The animation is amazing again; it reminded me of Klaus (Film, 2019). Kind of the same style. Nice characters, nice humour, action, and the kids laughed a lot. Good luck.

Knights traditionally descend from noble lineages. Ballister Boldheart [Riz Ahmed] has so distinguished himself that he is the first civilian to be knighted. But at the ceremony, Ballister's sword is revealed to be enchanted, causing it to kill the King [Lorraine Toussaint]. Ballister changes from a folk hero to a folk enemy in a second and that also seems to cost him his relationship with his friend (also a knight) Ambrosius [Eugene Lee Yang]. Ballister is on his own, until Nimona [Chloë Grace Moretz] shows up in his life. This headstrong, anarchist maverick wants to help, but her ideas are anything but subtle. It's nice that a family film takes homosexuality for granted and doesn't make a big deal of it. Too bad that Bruno and Quane approach the comic elements like Bob Clampett's 'Looney Tunes' and that the screenplay tries to evoke sentiments in the second half that are vaguely reminiscent of Up. The approach of sawing thick wood with planks detracts from the certainly not bad story and the excellent voice performances. If Bruno and Quane had taken this material a little more seriously, it would have been a considerably better movie.

Wonderfully fresh action animation. Colorful characters, a well-kept story and quite a bit of humor. A reviewer from Empire compared it somewhat to Shrek. I can agree with something, even if it is of course a modern film of its own. But we get a classic knight story with a futuristic sauce on it. You notice that with a solid story, half of the film is already successful.

It sometimes lacks the charm to become a real top film, but the decoration and the diversity in the characters ensures that it is something different from what we usually get served. Visually also very colorful and flashy, although they can't completely hide the computer style.

In terms of story style, Nimona can safely place itself next to Tomm Moore's animated films (The Secret of Kells, Song of the sea and Wolfwalkers). Hopefully we see more of this.
