Soviet Bus Stops plot

Canadian photographer Christopher Herwig has a crazy penchant for special bus stops from the Soviet era. In those days everything, including architecture, was under strict central authority. Buildings had to be monumental, an ode to communism. But local bus stops occasionally managed to escape this central authority.

During a bike ride through Europe to St. Petersburg, Christopher Herwig became fascinated by the bus stops he passed. These were built during the Soviet Union and that is why it is so remarkable that each bus stop has a unique design. This documentary follows Herwig on yet another pilgrimage through Russia and former Soviet states, in which he expands his photo collection and talks to some of the architects who designed these bus stops. The history of the bus stops is not all that special and the film mainly consists of shots of the bus stops or of Herwig trying to photograph a bus stop. Entertaining, but especially recommended for fans of Soviet-era architecture.
