The film is about an idealistic and thoroughly good and guilty teacher who would rather give her own life than blame someone else, but who also becomes the target of a smear campaign by just about everyone against her because she is the thief has filmed and at the same time does not want to judge, which contrast produces some drama and which escalation produces some tension but ultimately does not deliver: there is no denouement (we do not learn who the thief is), climax (we do not learn how it ends) or surprising twist. The ending is at least incomprehensible but probably meaningless: we see the student, who is fighting a personal feud with the teacher, solving the Rubik's cube, followed by geometric images of the schoolrooms and the student being triumphantly carried out of the school by the police[/spoiler ]. It is a nice but ultimately unremarkable film that disappoints as a German entry for the Oscar.

A number of thefts have been committed at a secondary school with a zero-tolerance policy. Instead of reporting this to the police, the school starts an investigation on the premise that one of the students from Miss Nowak's class [Leonie Benesch] is to blame. School principal Böhm [Anne-Kathrin Gummich] and victim Liebenwerda [Michael Klammer] interrogate the class representatives and it turns out (more or less) that Ali [Can Rodenbostel] is the perpetrator. And so his parents [Uygar Tamer, Özgür Karadeniz] have to come to school immediately. Naturally, dissatisfaction arises among the students who bombard Miss Nowak with critical questions that she cannot or should not answer honestly, but in doing so she only stokes the fire further. Well directed and excellently acted drama about the mental attack on an honest intermediary who becomes a target for two parties that are diametrically opposed to each other. But starting the story at a time when the situation has already escalated (in a way that no school leader should accept) provides insufficient context. As a former secondary school teacher, I was astounded by the incompetence and lack of empathy that causes all adults involved to react incorrectly in almost every situation. German entry for the 2024 Oscars.

Captivating drama about a committed teacher who tries to solve a theft at a secondary school to the best of her knowledge and then becomes the center of all the commotion. An intriguing character study with excellent acting, especially from Leonie Benesch. One of the better films of this calendar year.
