This is another typical Wes-Anderson movie, with those beautiful shots, striking colors and wacky humor. But it's not surprising. I thought his previous one was brilliant, this one was entertaining, more of the same indeed.

This film is typical Wes Anderson with its well-known style of special colours, symmetrical shapes, dry humor and metal layers of stories within stories and once again manages to overwhelm the viewer with superimposed slightly absurd scenes. Despite the fact that it is more of the same, I find the film very successful and always entertaining. First of all, the film explicitly plays typical postmodern with its layering of (acting exercises of a comic actress who wants a tragic role in) a play in a TV program in a film, which consciously alienates it from reality and continuously delivers meta-comments. In the beginning the TV presenter says that his program shows “the inner-workings of a modern theatrical production” and in terms of content the film also has a typical modernist theme, namely the search for the meaning of life (after the ' death of God"). The play is set in 1955, so at a time of nuclear threat, but also of a belief in progress and the exploration of space as a substitute for the (Christian) belief that is waning: there is the hope that technology and science will give us “the secrets of the universe” and thus bring the meaning of our – often damaged and traumatized – life, which is of course an illusion. In the same way, the actors reflect on the meaning of the play – and therefore of the film – which of course also does not exist, other than that we, as modern beings, each in our own way, look for the meaning of the life (or a work of art).

With pain in my heart I have to say that I don't think it's a good movie. Even your idols sometimes make something that is less. After masterpieces such as The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch and Moonrise Kingdom, this is really much less for me. In terms of cinematography, colors and design, it is more than okay and again a real Wes Anderson. But in terms of script and humor, for example, this one doesn't compare to previous films. The man is so caught up in his creativity that as far as I'm concerned he has forgotten to make a good film. Think that with all the stars lining up to be allowed to participate in his films (and there were a lot here again) he forgot to gather some more no-men around him.
