Alma Viva plot

Like every summer, little Salomé's family returns to their relatives in the Portuguese mountains. The carefree atmosphere comes to an abrupt end when the grandmother unexpectedly passes away. While the adults speculate and argue about the funeral, Salomé is haunted by the ghost of her dead grandmother. In addition, the village whispers that the mysterious woman was a witch.

Every summer, Salomé [Lua Michel], who lives in France, stays with relatives in a Portuguese village where her grandmother Avó [Ester Catalão] rules. When Avó dies unexpectedly, the whole family must gather to say goodbye. Only then can the funeral take place. Due to plane delays, it is taking longer than expected and unrest in the village is increasing, even though Avó was a witch, according to some residents. That feeling is reinforced when Salomé starts to show bizarre behavior. The screenplay offers enough possibilities to turn this into either a horror film or a black comedy. Unfortunately, Alves Meira is mainly interested in passing goats and picturesque pictures and she misses every opportunity to make something of this. The result is a wandering, poorly directed and immediately forgettable trifle.

Every summer, little Salomé stays with family in a northern Portuguese village where time seems to have stood still. Modern times (car) collide with the village, where transport is by donkey cart and belief in ghosts and in St. George (that of the dragon) is taken seriously. From Salomé's perspective, we follow the daily activities of the villagers that are disrupted when Salomé's grandmother dies.

With tacit seriousness, Salomé watches the escalating event and, with her magical gifts, is not left out of harm's way either. It seems, we will not know for sure.

The film meanders atmospherically between magic and realism. And (of course) ends in a suffocating drama, in which St. George also loses out.

I've enjoyed it.
