Amsterdam photographer Paul Blanca (real name: Paul Vlaswinkel) died in October 2021 and can only be seen here a few times. He makes a hectic, somewhat confused impression that matches the image that his friends, acquaintances and colleagues paint of him. With his controversial images of various forms of violence (self-mutilation; crying naked women; extreme bondage), he commanded the respect of his role model Robert Mapplethorpe, who reportedly considered Blanca “his only competitor”. As an introduction to his work this is quite interesting, but no one seems to have really known Paul Blanca – or consciously stays on the surface. Filmed in the black and white style of Blanca's photography, but that seems mainly a way to disguise the lack of depth.

A documentary about the life and work of Paul Blanca. Not really a familiar name to me, and I'm not really sure if I had ever really seen anything by him before this film - there are certainly nice records, but also a lot that really doesn't appeal to me. Mickey Mouse as the easiest example, but also hitting a nail through your own hand, it's just really not my thing.

Made shortly before his death, and perhaps that was a bit late, because the few conversations with himself are not exactly easy. Besides that, it is mainly a talking heads thing, and just too many members of the scary little circle of Amsterdam art pass by - even I know those names, despite the fact that I haven't watched TV for over twenty years. Yes, that incident with the car bomb was something I still vaguely remember. That was almost thirty years ago.

Blanca's work comes naturally, but what strikes me is that there is quite a bit of repetition in the 85 minutes of the documentary. Just about every image appears several times. It provides a somewhat unsatisfactory overview of a life that lasted 62 years - you would expect that there would be more to tell and see. Whether the incident with the car bomb and the subsequent exclusion from the art world played a role in this, or perhaps the drinking and drug use, or perhaps even Blanca's character - it is not really clear. This makes the documentary somewhat disappointing, it feels like an incomplete and superficial document.

In addition to the images of Blanca, there is also a lot of black and white images of the city, and that is always nice. A little distraction between the rather sad story.
