The Amsterdam Mixed Choir has been disproportionately affected by the corona virus. Singing has suddenly become a dangerous activity, the shared passion for singing together meets with fear and sadness. How does the choir overcome the fear of singing together again and does the choir manage to remain a unit?

The amateur singers of the Amsterdam Mixed Choir perform the Johannes Passion in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw once every four years. Their most recent performance took place on March 8, 2020, even though 30 members had opted out due to what seemed like a flu epidemic at the time. It soon became clear that this performance would have disastrous consequences: the vast majority were caught by corona, a number of them had to be hospitalized and a choir member and three partners of choir members died from the effects of the pandemic. Van den Berge follows the board, conductor Paul Valk, but especially the members of the choir themselves during the uncertain times. Sketches with integrity the practical, physical and mental consequences of a pandemic, but also how this increases awareness of the importance of being together and singing together, both on an individual and a collective level. It is not startling, but as a reminder of what once was, this is certainly valuable.
