White Balls on Walls plot

The slogan 'Meet the icons of modern art' has to be scratched off the glass wall of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Because who are those icons of modern art anyway? Who decides that and at whose expense? In 2019, when director Sarah Vos started filming for this documentary, about 90 percent of the art in the Stedelijk was made by white men. That has to change, says director Rein Wolfs. But that's easier said than done, as director Sarah Vos follows him and his team in their pursuit of more diversity in the collection and the workforce.

Fascinating insight into the internal kitchen of a leading museum. Art policy seems like an incredibly difficult balancing act in which the focus seems to be limited to identity. In that sense it does reflect the debate that is going on in our current society.

Surprisingly little of it was about content. And what is also striking: criticism is evaluated according to the identity of the person who expresses it. Color determines the debate at different levels. It could also be related to the editing, we don't know. But the edited jokes - “hey, soon they will think that the board only consists of white men” - mainly went in that direction.

There is also something pitiful and patronizing about that whole struggle, with the frenetic division into compartments, upgrading or depreciating on the basis of identity and censoring what no longer fits within the contemporary norm. The raised finger is never far away.

Well directed and with a fitting soundtrack of sawing strings.
