Finally another Jason Eisener film, I thought. His debut film Hobo with a Shotgun is one of my favorite films. He again opts for over the top and cyber and has once again put a fine color filter over the lens. But the screenplay is significantly inferior, the one-liners are missing and the action is also disappointing. No fountains of blood this time and no overly extravagant characters either. It's wonderful how he can portray the ultimate bullies, and the actors do their best, but that wasn't enough to really make it a great film.

The involvement of director Jason Eisener, who after 12 years (finally) no longer just directs a segment within an anthology film, creates certain expectations. He is a man who understands pulp entertainment and is fully immersed in it, but the film adaptation of his VHS segment leaves much to be desired. The acting in particular is disappointing, with many attempts being made to make everyone unique, but which fail to be effective. Eisener quickly descends into near-constant shouting, gratuitous fuss, and stiff dialogue throughout the overall film design. It doesn't help that there is also a focus on particularly caricatured characters who have to save the day. Some of the effects are impressive and the pace is high, but it doesn't often happen to me that I could appreciate the build-up better than the finale in a film like this. Eisener would have done better to give the aliens themselves a cooler shape. They reminded me of walking wooden mannequins, certainly not figures that you would think could cross entire planets. A serious setback, but hopefully Eisener will bounce back quickly with the next film.

Man, this video goes fast. At first I found that irritating, until I realized that I have seen a plot like this in all possible scenarios. So it was refreshing to have everything pass by at breakneck speed. Because of the lot of cursing, the kids in question also enjoy the practical effects very much.
