Oakley paints a striking, sometimes disturbing picture of London's gay community around 1988, when Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government tried to pass a law banning schools from 'promoting homosexuality'. Jean [Rosy McEwen] is a lesbian high school teacher who, partly because of the opinions of her colleagues, frenetically hides her sexual orientation, much to the frustration of friend Viv [Kerrie Hayes], who has no problem expressing her sexuality. Jean finds herself in a dilemma when she realizes that new student Lois [Lucy Halliday] is also a lesbian, especially when a classmate [Lydia Page] starts taunting Lois more and more. McEwen is outstanding as the teacher who is torn inside but manages to hide her true emotions enough to stay out of harm's way and Halliday impresses as the teenager who holds up a mirror to Jean in an uncompromising way.

Gripping psychodrama about a lesbian teacher who carefully hides her lifestyle from the outside world in Margaret Thatcher's conservative England, to the frustration of her partner. An incident with a new student forces her to look in the mirror. A strong directorial debut by Georgia Oakley with a beautiful title role by Rosy McEwen.

It always amazes me that it wasn't that long ago that homosexuality was a real taboo. Well, 35 years, long and not long of course. Same-sex marriage was only legalized in 2013 in only certain parts of the United Kingdom. In the Netherlands this was 2001, Belgium followed two years later.

Here we follow the character Jean who is a lesbian and lives in two completely separate worlds. On the one hand, she teaches and it is absolutely not done to reveal her orientation because of the famous section 28. She also blocks it, even promotes it and in this way pulls other people, students, down with it.

On the other hand, she leads a somewhat dissolute life in some hidden pub. She hangs out with other lesbians with completely different values far away from school. They, the girlfriend in particular, don't seem to understand why she is so reserved about her sexuality in public.

Blue Jean is a subdued portrait of this dilemma. A catchy scene here and there. For example, I found her sister's attitude very confrontational during babysitting or the family party. "I understand and accept that you are 'different', but…". Horrible.
