The curious and smart girl Matilda Wormwood has a vivid imagination. However, she is not lucky with her parents, but devours books as a pastime. Her teacher encourages her to bring her own stories to life. When Matilda is admitted to Crunchem Hall, she soon discovers that the school is run by the evil Miss Trunchbull. Fortunately, Matilda can count on her new school friends, Miss Honey and the librarian Mrs. phelps. But Matilda won't let the injustice happen and wants to teach Trunchbull a lesson.

Watched this movie with my wife, who really liked the musical. Great role by Emma Thompson, who wouldn't have looked out of place as a concentration camp guard

Thick wood is used to saw planks, according to Warchus, who treats every musical intermezzo as a finale and partly because of this leaves very little of the hypothermic, morbid humor of Roald Dahl. The songs are well put together, especially in terms of lyrics (a song with the alphabet as a leitmotif is a gem) and Thompson visibly enjoys her role as the disfigured school principal Agatha Trunchbull (say Nanny McPhee's evil stepsister), but both the choreography and acting are so over-the-top that it gets rather tired. Sindhu Vee is good as librarian Mrs Phelps, but Stephen Graham is the absolute star as Matilda's father and has the best moments. Unfortunately, there are few of them. Rather watch Matilda (1996).
