You don't expect anything very special from director Victor Garcia, who has made a name for himself by producing so many parts in a franchise. And that is correct. The Communion Girl is not a bad film, but not something very special either.

The film looks solid. Most effects are handmade. Occasionally, CGI is not entirely successful. The noble handicraft looks better. The story is entertaining enough to keep your attention. The setting in the Spanish countryside of the late 80s provides a pleasant atmosphere. Technically speaking, there is nothing to complain about in the film. So all good things.

It's just not very original. While watching I was repeatedly reminded of Hollywood productions such as Annabelle (2014) and Annabelle (2014). It does say something. The film is not intended to be anything more than an entertaining teen ghost story and does so by drawing inspiration from other works. The result is a pleasantly flowing story with atmospheric effects in the form of flickering lights, some mild body horror, some shadow work and some ghostly apparitions. Doable but nothing spectacular.

The apotheosis is not bad in design but comes across as rather cramped. The intention is clear. Garcia hints at a sequel. Don't do it, I advise.

Director Víctor García has been in the business for a while, but with The Communion Girl, he seems to genuinely want to deliver a classic. He has many ideas, from the tight acting to the atmospheric visual design. While the film never tries to get too exciting, it remains captivating and has enough substance to avoid being considered mediocre. A slight drawback is the lack of innovation and the less-than-intimidating antagonist. In that respect, García uses genre clichés a bit too emphatically, while the ultimate (digital) monster is barely shown for a second.
