Affleck likes to play with his girls in films, which previously resulted in a minor disaster with Gigli (and Jen Lopez), but in that respect Deep Water is not too bad. This sultry thriller (trademark of director Lyne), based on the story of Patrica Highsmith (we recognize a bit of Talented Mr. Ripley, but that film was better), has as its main asset that the question of whether or not Affleck is the killer remains unanswered for a long time. When the reveal finally takes place half an hour before the end titles, you are still disappointed with the further outcome. It all looks pretty good, but it doesn't feel entirely good, this film. Oh well, with such a beautiful but irritatingly slutty film woman like De Armas by his side, you can't really blame Ben from the start if he actually kills dead bodies, any self-respecting husband will be able to empathize with him to some extent, because Ana makes it very incredibly colorful. All in all, certainly not the best that Lyne has given us, too unsatisfactory by leaving it too much to suggestion, but in terms of style he is always good and that compensates for a small satisfactory.

Film adaptation of the book of the same name by Patricia Highsmith in which Vic [Ben Affleck], the wealthy designer of a chip used for drone attacks, intimidates the suspected lover [Brendan Miller] of his flirtatious wife Melinda [Ana de Armas] by telling him that he killed a previous lover with his own hands. Melinda continues to stir up Vic's jealousy, and they are also introduced to a writer [Tracy Letts] who suspects that Vic is indeed responsible for an as yet unsolved murder. Affleck's role evokes too emphatic memories of Gone Girl and Ana de Arnas is too vulgar, so that the viewer does not doubt for a moment whether she is adulterous or nothing. Lyne pours an unnecessary layer of sauce over it and there is a far-fetched denouement. The book is undoubtedly better, but Grace Jenkins (who plays daughter Trixie) deserves bonus points for her karaoke version of Leo Sayer's 70s classic “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing.”

Thriller? Mystery? I thought both were fine. Still, this film was fascinating, mainly because the question remained a bit about how and what. Interesting plot and some good actors/actresses that pulled this off. We should certainly not ignore little Trix. What a lucky guy that Vic is, in more ways than one. Melinda's final choice was also no surprise. I enjoyed watching this movie.
