Against the Ice plot

"Survive the search. Survive each other."

In 1909, Ejnar Mikkelsen leads an expedition to Greenland. He wants to disprove the United States' claim that Greenland consists of two parts. Along the way, he leaves the ship with the inexperienced Iver Iversen, which remains behind with the remaining crew members, and continues his journey by sleigh. The gentlemen come across evidence that Greenland consists of one part, but are confronted with famine and fatigue on their return journey. In addition, there is no trace of the crew and their ship is enclosed.

A captivating film based on a true story. In particular, the circumstances in which the protagonists found themselves and the decisions she made kept my attention. Especially the madness that ensues after days of hoping for rescue was well developed in the last part of the film. That's why I don't really understand the low score here on Moviemeter, on IMDB this film has a score of 7.7 which I can agree with. Finally a normal film with good acting that makes an impression, worth a big 3.5 for me.

This is definitely a movie genre that I'm all for. I always enjoy watching films about voyages of discovery or quests on land or at sea (and if necessary in the air).

As far as I'm concerned, this film largely lived up to expectations, although I also agree with most of the criticism here. Except for the last half hour of the film: I found that a lot less. I found the beginning and the first hour of the film very strong: a very nice atmosphere in the stranded boat and once the tour started you felt the adrenaline and curiosity as a viewer, something that is also evident with Joe Cole. dripped off. Also that mixed feeling of the beauty of the sometimes beautiful snowy landscape under a radiant sun on the one hand and the gloomy and desolate landscape full of dangers on the other.

Afterwards it went a bit downhill as too often big time jumps are made, making it seem like it isn't all that much. Slightly more problems (such as frozen limbs, really starving to death, ... were hardly discussed or were pushed too much into the background). Only the dogs that lose weight one by one I found plausible, but also very sad to see because I am a big animal and especially dog lover.. The pace that was a bit too high in the beginning of the film, then suddenly dropped drastically in the last half hour. And that was just not necessary, that part of the film appealed to me the least.

Certainly a film that is worth watching, especially the first hour and a half, but here and there it pinches a bit and there are things that could have been better.

The potential was there, but unfortunately it never really materialized. What could have been a psychologically exhausting and/or exciting survival film is now mainly… well, monotonous. Against the Ice certainly has some good scenes to offer, but the film never really comes alive. Scenes like the sled hanging from the abyss, the polar bear attack or crossing the thin ice could or should have been portrayed much more intensely; the perilous and harsh conditions in the Arctic did not seem very intrusive in this way. Furthermore, the film mainly consists of a constant repetition of (quickly overcoming) obstacles and conversations/quarrels between the two men, which leads to a, as I said, monotonous whole. At the end they try to lift the psychological aspect to a higher elan by letting Coster-Waldau's character go crazy, but this was also unsuccessful. A bit rushed and simple, and almost immediately after that a quick happy ending.

Well good; the gloomy musical notes support the images of a vast and desolate winter landscape very well, the atmosphere could have been a bit stronger but is still okay, and especially the acting is fine. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has always been a must see for me, and Joe Cole does that well too. It is not an actor's film in the sense that they really have to bring out the best in themselves (another missed opportunity..), but they do have a nice presence.

2.5*. There could have been more.
