When Leonard Cohen released his seventh studio album Various Positions in 1984, the hymn Hallelujah was barely paid attention to. Only Bob Dylan, who soon performed the song live, seemed to see its value. But it had to wait for the cover of Jeff Buckley three years later before Hallelujah would become a universally known pop song. In the film, the directing duo Geller & Goldfine explains the history of the song. They also use the song to look at Cohen's life in an alternative way.

Surely I won't be the only one for whom it is a mystery why the Leonard Cohen-written Hallelujsh has become an absolute favorite with such an incredibly wide audience? This documentary explores that popularity, first by placing the song in the context of Leonard Cohen's career as a poet, songwriter and singer, then by following the long journey through Judy Collins, John Cale and Jeff Buckley to the status it has today . Fans of Cohen and the song will appreciate this more. Others may hope (in vain) for a sequel to Milk & Honey. Or maybe about Dr. Alban?!

Too bad it's mainly about hallelujah, in my opinion a nice song, but no more than that. Let's face it, if Jeff Buckley hadn't gone off the hook, we'd never have heard that version again. Also lacks some depth, other than the song.

Beautiful documentary that further supplemented my image of Leonard Cohen and also beautifully showed how he evolved. I feel a strong affinity with his position as a sardonic outsider (or at least with that part of his personality that comes across that way to me), but I have never really delved into his life, only into his earlier work, and then it is nice to see how he talks about it and how thoughtfully he views his work. I was also regularly moved: here is a man who led his own life and created his own art, a unique figure in "pop" music, and I felt that the documentary gave him all the space and highlighted the most important aspects of him and his work was well discussed. But as mentioned, that is the opinion of someone who does not know very much about him.
It's funny to see the photo of him playing with his white mini organ at the time of I'm your man: that is the Casio PT-30, and I recognize it because I also used that at the time. bought a mini synthesizer (expensive to describe it) to be able to arrange the songs on my acoustic guitar in a more spacious manner.
