In the 1950s, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz are the big stars of American TV. The sitcom "I Love Lucy" is a huge hit. The film is a portrait of the couple during the hit years.

The film has little to do with the actual sitcom. Director and writer Aaron Sorkin is very concerned with the problems on the set and the mutual hatred between the couple. The genius of the series remains undiscussed. The reason for the success of the series is barely touched upon.

Still, the glimpse provides some nice revelations. Arguing on the set. Time pressure. Gossip. Outsiders. The fight with the norm of decency. The creation of a weekly episode of the series is accompanied by a hard struggle every day and takes a lot of energy. Fighting with the turbulent drama surrounding the sitcom, the comedy in the series is created in a hard-fought and cynical way. Exhausting for the actors. For the makers as well. The few reenacted scenes from the series immediately become a lot less funny.

Good acting. Nicole Kidman plays the role of businesswoman and comedienne Lucille Ball excellently. Javier Bardem is solid. Although Being the Ricardos lacks the liveliness of other work by Sorkin and is even a bit tiring at times, the time travel to the 50s is reasonably amusing.

Like Sorkin's previous films: well written and the script is fine in terms of design, but as a director he lacks a personal touch. And in this film he makes everything completely solid, which makes this too often a bit boring. Visually there is little to experience, despite reasonable atmosphere and beautiful decoration. The film has to rely on the well-written texts and the actors. Bardem in particular plays a fine role. Kidman is also in good form, but her expressionless face does not really fit her role. Simmons does well again, but in a role that does not amount to much and we actually know this Simmons already. All in all a film that gives a good picture, but as a film it does not bring enough to remain interesting for 130 minutes. 3.0*.

Nicole Kidman marathon 55#

Boring and what's the point? movie

I was really looking forward to the film so I could learn more about Lucille Ball and her history. Unfortunately, it turns out to be a snapshot of a few days on the set. This is of no use to you. You don't get any wiser, it's not interesting and is old and boring with a few bright spots here and there. The second half makes it all a bit more pleasant and that's why it still gets two stars.

The first half is hard to get through. Kidman is nothing like Lucille Ball. Only in the acting (imitating the original scenes) does she come close.
