He recruits a group of local miners to dig a tunnel under the no man's land, from the Allied trenches to those of the Germans. In this way they hope to detonate bombs from below the German line and thus save the Allied war effort.

Mediocre history lesson about a group of soldiers who are given an almost impossible task during the First World War and have to complete it in a limited time. The trenches form a prominent theme in The War Below and director JP Watts manages to portray the tunnels in a fairly claustrophobic way, but in the end there is little left of a real film experience. This can mainly be attributed to uninteresting characters, an ineffective arc of tension and fairly cheap-looking decoration. The relationship development is also not really convincing, but a number of war moments are convincingly portrayed and the second half looks tight. This is partly why this film wins a number of bonus points, but unfortunately it does not become very gripping all in all.

I decided to watch this film after visiting the Battle of Mesen war museum in Ploegsteert and a 20km walk in and around Mesen.

This film plays fast and loose with reality. On June 7, 1917, not just one German bunker blew up, but a whopping 19 explosive charges were detonated simultaneously during the night. Some 10,000 Germans were killed in a single blast. It was the most powerful explosion until Hiroshima surpassed that record.

Moreover, the film doesn't show any interesting details. For example: An important detail: The excavated clay had to be dumped far away. After all, the clay in the subsoil was blue. Dumping it near the front would have revealed that tunneling work was underway!

The film should have invested more in presenting the truth, instead of overdramatizing the story of these five miners. Who needed that, when reality is much more exciting?
