La Scuola Cattolica plot

In a residential area of Rome there is a well-known Catholic boys' school, where the children of the well-to-do bourgeoisie are educated. The families believe that their children can grow up there sheltered from the turmoil of society and that a strict upbringing will open wide the doors of a bright future for them. On the night of September 29-30, 1975, something broke and that fortress of incomprehensible values crumbled under the weight of one of the most heinous crimes of the time: the Circeo massacre. The perpetrators are in fact former students of that school. Edoardo, who attended the same school, tries to explain what caused so much blind violence.

Not an easy movie, but a good one. In 2018 Edoardo Albinati published his opus magnus "the Catholic school". In nearly 1,500 pages, he tries to explain how three boys from a tidy affluent neighborhood can turn into monsters and be capable of the atrocities of the infamous and famous Circeo crime. A remarkable factor in this narration is that the writer knew the murderers. He was at school with them at the time, in class; The Catholic School. Then try to film that. And to be honest, I think that this was partly achieved through a sophisticated scenario and many dialogues, a lot of symbolism and chosen music. The director makes the choice to save the horrific crime until the end. The filming of this is horribly chilling and gets in your head.

So as a book adaptation quite successful. As a film well passed with beautiful images, ditto music. Sometimes really beautiful scenes with beautiful cinematography. Careful production. Very much worth it. But probably not for everyone.

True story about unscrupulous youngsters of good descent, who torture and rape two girls in 1970s Rome; with fatal consequences. The confused run-up to the shocking events does the film no good.

Annoying film that you don't enjoy watching, if only because of the indifference of the perverted machos about the fate of their victims. Rigging off the ledge and that's putting it mildly.

I expected something different with this title, more sexual tension and more involvement from the clergy. What we get, however, is a movie with so many characters that I had no idea who was who, who is a main character at all and who isn't. Furthermore, a muddled story, which seems to go nowhere until suddenly two girls are kidnapped and tortured. As a film a total failure and this story deserves so much better. 0.5*.
