The story takes place in 1999. A group of friends and teammates do not have much success as a rowing team at an elite university. In addition, there is a constant battle between the leaders of the team. Their lives are changed forever when an Army veteran, Coach Jack Murphy, becomes the supervisor of the dysfunctional team.

Chariots of Fire on the water.
And compared to that masterpiece, a lot is actually missing, but despite that it is quite a pleasant and enjoyable film. The controversy between the characters may be less pompous and less tied to age-old tradition, but it is still very real. And well, it's about rowing, and the heroes also set very fast times on the ergometer. Faster than I've ever managed, and my neighbor who rowed at Okeanos at the time didn't really manage to do that either, I'm afraid. Oh yes, it's just a film, of course.
Michael Shannon attracts just about all the attention, but this is that kind of film. Ludwig comes just a little bit close, on the wedge between good guy and bad guy - maybe not perfect, but as good as could be achieved with the limitations of the plot. And that makes me think, what exactly is it, the spark that makes Chariots of Fire such a masterpiece and this film something average. Yet something that is very close to the mentality of real top sport - a ruthless desire for absolute perfection. Maybe this film is at something like 90% of that, but you won't get much more than an average with that.
