Will Smith is great here as the father who will do everything in his power to turn his daughters, Venus and Serena Williams, into tennis stars. He plays the part just right, not too exaggerated and cool enough not to make a caricature of the best man. The film is otherwise very entertaining, albeit a bit on the long side. Tony Goldwyn and Jon Bernthal are also on a roll as two coaches who quickly realize the talent they are dealing with.

The main shortcoming of this film is that the development of the Williams sisters into phenomenal tennis stars is only highlighted from their manipulating father. The sisters hardly speak for themselves. Moreover, I learned afterwards that it is only half the story, because the film pays absolutely no attention to the (failed) first marriage of “king” Richard Williams.
All this does not alter the fact that I find it an interesting film, with which I enjoyed myself more than reasonably.

Quite a nice biopic about how the father of the Williams sisters coached them in their youth. Initially I was a little reluctant to start on King Richard, because I don't like Will Smith after his retarded affair at the Oscars, but I can't blame the film or the Williams sisters on that, who contributed to the film.
I don't have anything with tennis at all, and apart from some well-known tennis players it doesn't mean much to me, but that doesn't matter; the film could just as easily have been about basketball, football, curling or biathlon because the message is basically the same. Believe in yourself, perseverance, don't walk next to your shoes, blah blah. That kind of sporty stuff.
I found it entertaining in terms of drama. The necessary struggles in Compton, but nothing startling. Even presented a bit too rosy, romantic and (self-)glorifying, with the necessary obligatory Oscar bait scenes, but I didn't find it annoying. Richard Williams was a stern man, but a well-meaning father with a small heart. Furthermore, the film occasionally has beautiful images, some humor and excellent acting (yes, Will Smith is still wearing the film, whether you like it or not.)
What I did miss was a little more depth about the tennis game itself. What made Venus and Serena so good, what set them apart, what was their impact on the sport? I get that it's an ode to their father, but still, it could have had a little more depth.
