Kandisha plot
It's summer vacation. Amélie and her best friends Bintou and Morjana spend time with other teenagers in the neighborhood. In the evening they tell each other ghost stories. Amélie is attacked by her ex and remembers a story about the powerful, vengeful demon Kandisha. In an angry mood, Amélie calls Kandisha. The next day, Amélie's ex is found dead. Did Kandisha really come to life?

The title gives away that it's a Djinn story. For my girlfriend that's always a no-go. In Islamic cultures, the fear of these kinds of creatures is deeply ingrained and that fear is traditionally passed on from grandmother to granddaughter. I didn't take that into account, but unfortunately the film was disappointing. A veiled woman is always a bit creepy, but I find a veiled monster a bit too cheap and lazy. The acting performances were substandard and the script was hanging together by a thread.

Reasonable but still a bit weak for Bustillo & Maury. The story has been done before despite what else. Also reminds me of Candyman for example or Bloody Mary in the mirror say. In terms of concept it is not all that innovative. It has to rely on the kills. They are actually quite weak in the beginning. They seem to realize that later and then the deaths become increasingly brutal and actually also more unrealistic.
No, these directors can definitely do better.

Maury and Bustillo are back. Well, it's been a long time, and since their TCM excursion, since I've seen a movie of theirs.
Kandisha is a youth-in-a-French-ghetto film combined with a ghost story. The legend of the Djinn.
What will that be?
It is certainly not bad. The three girls act well and the grim atmosphere of the banlieu is again prominently present. Here and there some winks to La Haine too (the roof terrace, the different ethnic origins of the friends). It all works quite well. And how does the ghost story turn out?
Yes, in itself okay. Although this has already been done in so many shapes and sizes. I think ghost stories are becoming a bit outdated. If it weren't for the fact that the attempt was quite good and fortunately it doesn't become soft either.
The way the "chosen ones" go around the corner is not manly; but then again, what else do you expect from this French director duo. The further course of this spirit you can now dream a bit.
Quite cliché by now, but still quite entertaining due to the creation and the acting.
Let me just call it a snack.
