Madres Paralelas plot

Janis and Ana meet at the hospital where both are about to give birth. The women have in common that they are single and did not consciously want to get pregnant. While Janis seems ready for motherhood, the younger Ana, still in her teens, is terrified of the future. The ladies spend the hours before the birth together, which means that they create a close bond in a short time. This has an impact on their future lives.

Good film about two women who give birth at the same time in the hospital. A beautiful drama about motherhood with some light thriller elements (the music and editing certainly contribute to this). The connection between the two storylines was not very clear to me, but it was a nice ending. Good role by Penelope Cruz. Easily 3.5 stars.

Janis [Penélope Cruz] and Ana [Milena Smit] get to know each other in the hospital where they gave birth to a daughter on the same day. I immediately knew what was about to happen, but Janis needs considerably more time for that. Moreover, it is not so difficult to predict how the story will continue and that is the big flaw of this disappointing soap opera drama from Almodóvar, who normally avoids this kind of banalities. Cruz does a good job under the circumstances, but an Oscar nomination for such a superficial role was a bit violated. That doesn't change the fact that Cruz fans might give this an extra star.

My 14th film by Almodóvar. As always it is good to watch, but in my opinion it is not one of his better works. That's mainly because the movie is too packed with drama. Especially the background of Ana and how her pregnancy came about is overloaded. This line was unnecessary in my opinion. It is also a bit static and talkative. I liked the fade-outs and how a detail is highlighted a bit longer.
