Chernobyl plot

Chernobyl, 1986. After a failed safety test at a nuclear power plant, an explosion occurs with disastrous consequences. Alexey, a firefighter, goes on a dangerous mission to drain water from a reservoir beneath the burning nuclear reactor. He does this together with engineer Valery and military diver Boris. There is no time for proper planning and the water they have to brave is getting hotter by the hour. To prevent an even greater disaster, the three men are willing to sacrifice their own lives.

If that series hadn't been there, we would have found this a pretty good movie.

But well, that's not how it is. This film chooses to play the role of the heroes and ignore the politics. That could have worked if so much wasn't already known about the background of the disaster—and all the similar problems with nuclear power plants, and yes, there are certainly more of those than is comfortable. Three Mile Island, Sellafield/Winscale, Chernobyl, Fukushima—all seriously major accidents with consequences that last for generations. And all of them done so in such a foolish way that you really wonder how anyone could even think of suggesting that nuclear energy can be safe. It's very simple: a plant is very, very expensive. This also raises the stakes and prestige very, very high, and the problems in all phases, from construction to operation to decommissioning, are simply swept under the rug. Until it gets out of hand, which it almost always does.

In short, stop this nonsense. Humanity is incapable of using this kind of technology in a sensible and meaningful way. And I haven't even mentioned the waste problem.

Oh yeah, the film then. Beautiful visuals, a compelling hero or anti-hero, and a sweet girl to make it a perfect tearjerker. But that's beating around the bush somewhat—this entire disaster could and should have easily been prevented. Not just because a mistake was made—no, a series of criminal stupidities were committed. And the biggest of them was thinking the Soviet Union would be capable of using nuclear energy safely. And they had their act together much better than the commercially governed, free West where we live.

But, the images are beautiful, the music fits perfectly, and the leading roles are properly filled, I also wanted to say that.

If you're used to the HBO series, it can only be disappointing. It's utterly unbelievable that everyone around the protagonist quickly becomes seriously radioactively ill, yet the protagonist himself can climb onto the roof and later connect the power cable without turning red. No, a fairy tale is even more believable.

A tribute to the emergency workers involved in the rescue efforts following the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, with Kozolvskiy embodying the firefighters. He is one of those who risks his life to mitigate the disaster's consequences. This solid disaster film lacks the epic scale it deserves due to a limited budget and is further undermined by genre clichés, including a romantic subplot.
