A bit of a strange, hillbilly-like film, especially when it comes to the start. The first scene with the sect was completely out of place, but there is a second scene: 'back to the ether'! It soon becomes clear where the plot is going. Nothing special, but it scores well enough for me. Deadwyler, whats in a name, at least does a great job as Lemon.

Childish winks.

The Devil to Pay is a reasonable and entertaining attempt at a hillbilly thriller, but there are much better examples. Admittedly, the shots of the Apalachians are beautiful, but real atmosphere is hard to find. Perhaps leading lady Danielle Deadwyler is just a little too stylish for a 'mountain woman'. Anyway, the styling is rather slick, but maybe our image of the poor American mountain people is wrong. Good thing a dark lady is the heroine. Appalachians don't necessarily have to be white.

Yet you miss the raw edge of, for example, Out of the Furnace, where everything is served tastefully. A masterpiece compared to this work. Good acting or a nice script is not present here and it is therefore all too clean. There is another interesting attempt with a cult, but here too the makers take the wrong path, although it could have resulted in a nice Wrong Turn . To be able to continue to wink childishly with lame word jokes; unfortunately the film does not deserve Deliverance.

**½
